Sandspit Beach Karachi is a globally important nesting site for two endangered species of marine turtles; the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), that visit the beach for nesting between June-December each year. A large number of people from Karachi and round the country visit this picnic spot. Due to absence of waste collection & disposal facilities the beach is littered by the visitors which results in disturbance of safe nesting of marine turtles.
On September 8, 2008, Dawood Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd. (A Dawood Group Company) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan to collaborate for the establishment of a Regular Beach Cleaning Mechanism for Sandspit Beach, Karachi. Under this MoU The Dawood Corporation will provide financial support to WWF Pakistan for installation of Waste Bins and hiring & maintenance of Cleaning Staff.
Collaboration with the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) for disposal of collected solid waste from the site will also be established.
